A homeowner in Edinburgh City Centre recently contacted us regarding a Ceramic Tiled shower cubicle in their traditional tenement flat. It had been used regularly and over time dirt had built-up on the tiles and especially the grout which was heavily stained. Mould was also prevalent, especially along the silicone sealant between the tiles and shower tray.

Deep Cleaning a Ceramic Tiled Shower Cubicle in Edinburgh
I started by spraying the grout lines with Tile Doctor Duo Clean which is a double action grout and mould remover and was designed for situations like this. After leaving it to dwell for ten to twenty minutes the grout lines and tile were scrubbed with hot water and a stiff brush then rinsed off with more water.
This cleaned the tiles nicely and certainly cleaned the grout but unfortunately the staining was so bad in places along the grout line it was now consistently clean. I had prepared for this possibility and had a white grout colourant on standby. These colourants are not grout pens which are only really for touching up grout, they are a long-lasting epoxy-based application that covers up the grout, fully sealing it in leaving a consistent appearance.
The kit comes with a pre-treater which is sprayed onto the grout first, this is an acidic cleaner that enables a stronger bond between the grout and the colourant. Once that had been applied and then rinsed off and the grout dried and the colourant painted on with a small brush. The excess is wiped off the adjacent tile and a second coat applied where needed.
Once this was done the old silicone was removed with a sharp knife and replaced with fresh mould-resistant bathroom-grade silicone, ensuring a clean, watertight finish around the shower area.
The result was a bright, fresh-looking shower room with grout lines and sealant that looked as good as new, giving the entire bathroom a renewed appearance without the cost and disruption of re-grouting.
For aftercare cleaning I recommended the use of Tile Doctor Aqua Pro Cleaner which is a pH neutral product that comes in an easy-to-use spray bottle designed with everyday use in mind.
